Top things to do in Nairobi

Explore this magical capital city in a variety of ways!

When travel arrangements require spending some time in Kenya's capital of Nairobi, your clients don't need to worry because this colourful city offers an eclectic mix of activities that combine wildlife encounters, rich cultural heritage, and tantalising food experiences. Whether your clients are history buffs, nature lovers, or foodies, Nairobi has something for everyone. Here's some of the top activities we can weave into our itineraries to introduce your clients to the best Nairobi has to offer...

Visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

For wildlife enthusiasts, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is an absolute must. Located in Nairobi National Park, this sanctuary is renowned for its orphaned elephant rescue and rehabilitation programme. Every morning, visitors can observe baby elephants enjoying a playful mud bath and a feeding session. During the visit, they can also foster an elephant, rhino, or giraffe through the trust's global fostering programme, making a meaningful contribution to Kenyan wildlife conservation.

Explore the Karen Blixen Museum

Step back in time with a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum (pictured at the top of the page), the former home of the famed Danish author of Out of Africa. Located at the foot of the Ngong Hills, the museum provides a fascinating insight into the colonial history of Kenya and the life of Blixen herself. The grounds also feature a charming shop offering handcrafted souvenirs, books, and more. There's also the chance to explore the surrounding gardens or enjoy a meal at the nearby Karen Blixen Coffee Garden.

The Giraffe Centre

Just a short distance from central Nairobi, the Giraffe Centre offers a unique chance to interact with endangered Rothschild's giraffes. Visitors can feed these gentle giants from a raised platform and learn about the centre’s successful breeding and conservation efforts. The giraffes aren’t the only residents — warthogs also roam freely, adding to the fun and wildlife encounters that families will adore.

Carnivore Restaurant

For foodies, a trip to Nairobi wouldn’t be complete without experiencing The Carnivore, Nairobi’s famed meat-lovers' haven. Known as the "Beast of a Feast" this iconic restaurant offers an all-you-can-eat banquet of exotic meats like ostrich and crocodile, alongside more familiar fare such as pork and lamb. Meat is roasted over a traditional charcoal pit and carved directly onto your plate. For a true taste of Kenya, order the signature Dawa cocktail, served with flair by the restaurant’s "medicine man".

African Heritage House

Perched on a hill overlooking Nairobi National Park, the African Heritage House is often described as the most photographed house in Africa. Designed by Alan Donovan, the building is a tribute to African architecture, inspired by the ancient mud mosques of Mali and featuring an impressive collection of African artefacts. Guests can explore the house’s beautifully decorated rooms, each representing a different African culture, and enjoy authentic African cuisine while soaking in panoramic views.

Browse the Maasai Market

For a truly authentic shopping experience, head to the vibrant Maasai Market. This open-air market offers an array of colourful crafts, jewellery, clothing, and homeware — perfect for souvenirs. Each day, the market moves to a different location around the city, but the Saturday market behind the Hilton Hotel in Nairobi’s city centre is particularly popular.

The Nairobi Gallery

Housed in a beautifully restored Victorian-style building, the Nairobi Gallery is a national monument showcasing art from both local and international artists. A highlight of the gallery is the Murumbi Collection, featuring an impressive selection of African artefacts, including postage stamps, wooden jugs, and folk art. Art lovers will find plenty to admire in this historical space.

Kiambethu Tea Farm

Just outside Nairobi, in the lush highlands of Limuru, the Kiambethu Tea Farm offers a serene escape and a glimpse into Kenya’s rich tea history. Visitors can join a guided tour to learn about tea production, stroll through beautiful gardens, and spot colobus monkeys in the indigenous forest, ending the visit with a cup of the farm’s finest brew and a traditional cream tea.

All of the above activities can be included in your itinerary and our team takes care of all of the arrangements and transfers, leaving your clients stress-free and able to relax and enjoy their time in Nairobi. Let us know if there is anything else you would like to include and let's chat about the possibilities and logistics.

For many travellers to East Africa, the image of the Maasai warrior is as enduring as that of the wildebeest crossing the Mara River or the elephants roaming the Serengeti plains. The bright shúkà cloth, the beaded adornments, the slender frame of a herdsman striding the landscape.

For many safari travellers, the phrase "East Africa" conjures images of lions stalking the Serengeti, elephants crossing the Masai Mara, and leopards lounging in acacia shade. The Big Five remain the iconic drawcard – and rightly so – but the wild heart of East Africa offers far more than these familiar faces.

There’s a rhythm to northern Tanzania that plays out quietly beneath the headline acts. Away from the frenzy of river crossings in the north and the year-round traffic in Seronera, there’s a seasonal circuit that runs from the Ngorongoro Highlands into the southern reaches of the Serengeti

Tanzania is known for its wildlife, its big skies, and its even bigger landscapes. From the plains of the Serengeti to the baobab-studded wilderness of Tarangire, it’s a place that stirs something ancient and elemental in all of us. But the soul of Tanzania doesn’t just lie in its wild things. It lives in its people. In an age of endless choice and ever-louder noise, there’s something quietly radical about doing things with intention. At Anderson & Harvey, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all safari itineraries, nor do we chase trends or overcomplicate what’s inherently extraordinary. Instead, we believe in precision, depth, and the subtle art of matching the right guest to the right experience. This is not about ticking boxes. It’s about knowing which details matter, and crafting safaris that feel like they couldn’t have been made for anyone else...
